Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) honored the hardwork, academic achievement and community service of five local students with $500 and $1,000 scholarships, totaling $4,000. During a reception in their honor on Tuesday, the students received a gift bag to help them get started on their path to higher education.
“We recognized the great need in our community due to these tough economic times,” said Gary Jepson, CTMC President and CEO. “Awarding scholarships is a great way for us to extend the healing ministry of Christ beyond health care.”
The scholarships were awarded based on financial need, community service and academic excellence. After reviewing more than 100 applications, the CTMC Sponsorship Committee chose Viridiana Garcia, Brooke Morgan, Evelyn Rangel, Mathew Rogers and Joshua Ruiz as the 2009 scholarship recipients.
“CTMC is vital to our community and we believe each one of these students has played a vital role in service to our community,” said Tabitha Walsh, CTMC Sponsorship Committee Chair. “CTMC is honored to award each one with funds that will encourage their education.”
In 1997, CTMC began awarding 3 annual scholarships of $500 to students at San Marcos and Hays High School. In order to match the rising cost of education, the hospital decided to award three $1,000 scholarships beginning in 2009 and open the application process to students throughout the region. Due to a record number of deserving applicants, CTMC chose to award two additional $500 scholarships to this year’s group of applicants.
