SAN MARCOS, TX – The New Year at Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) started with new beginnings for a Central Texas family. The first baby of 2011 made his grand entrance at Central Texas Medical Center’s (CTMC) Women’s Center at 7:56 a.m. on January 1, 2011 and was born to a CTMC employee.
Vizente DeAndrez Gonzales became Hays County's newest resident. His parents, Andy and Stella of Kyle, had finished watching the New Year’s fireworks and settled in for the night. Stella went into labor just after midnight and Vizente was the first baby born in San Marcos in 2011.
“We were scared and didn’t know what to expect, but every single person here has been terrific,” said Stella. “They calmed me and explained everything in detail. We are so blessed to have our baby here safe and sound.”
Stella has been a registrar at CTMC for 21 years. Andy works for U-Haul in Austin. They have two older children, ages 16 and 12. A gift package with a portable crib and mobile, spa products and gift card were presented to Mom and Vizente as a celebration of the New Year arrival.
Dr. Jenifer Kowalik delivered Vizente and through her expertise, made the experience a good one for the Gonzales’. “She was wonderful and brought a lot of laughter which really helped to relax us all,” Stella explained.
The labor and delivery team at CTMC Women’s Center understands the special excitement of the New Year’s baby because a few of them have experienced it first hand. Kristie Smith, M.D., a neonatologist with CTMC Women’s Center, is the mother of Austin’s 2010 New Year’s baby, Avery Blair Smith.
“Avery arrived a week early and it was fun to see her on television,” said Kristie. “Our whole family got to see her and enjoy the moment with us.”
Dennis Marrero, C.S.T., C.F.A.-O.S., L.S.A., O.P.A.-C., is one of two New Year’s babies in his family. The certified first assist at CTMC was born exactly one hour later than his twin sister, Iris.
“Having not just one, but two New Year’s babies, was exciting for my mother,” said Dennis. “There was a celebration at the hospital and a lot of gifts for two babies!”
In 2010, CTMC’s Childbirth center delivered more than 1,000 babies. CTMC’s new state-of-the-art Women’s Center opened its doors on November 30, 2009. The 64,000-square-foot addition includes a new Women’s Center with all private rooms, a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and a new cardiac inpatient nursing unit also with all private rooms. It also includes an on-site, high-risk delivery suite and a customized cesarean section suite.
CTMC also offers expanded childbirth education and certified breastfeeding support. All programs are offered in both English and Spanish.
