Community encouraged to 'Gear Up' for 10-mile run benefitting local scholarships
SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – For the second consecutive year, Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) is teaming up with the San Marcos Manufacturer’s Association (SMMA) to host the SMMA Gear Up 10 Mile Run on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 7 a.m. The event, which will take place at the Tanger Outlet Center in San Marcos, will benefit local scholarships for students with ambitions to pursue higher education at a number of area educational institutions.

“Our first run became the most successful fundraising event in the history of SMMA,” said Lee Graham. “The net proceeds go to one of our important focus areas, which is providing student scholarships.”

SMMA has been awarding scholarships to local students since 1985, and last year’s Gear Up 10 Mile Run raised $12,369 for the cause.

According to Graham, the event will be unique for runners because it takes place on a Hill Country race course, designed by Moe Johnson, at Tanger Outlet Center, one of the largest outlet malls in Central Texas. All participants will receive a long-sleeved high-tech shirt and a collectable item commemorating the run.

“CTMC is delighted to be partnering with SMMA to hold this run event. Besides promoting healthy activity, we’re also helping to gear –up our next work force,” said Clay DeStefano, CTMC Administrative Director for PR & Marketing.

Those who want to participate may pre-register online at http://bit.ly/1ktK9qj. Pre-registration is $40 through Feb. 5. Late registration is $50 offered on February 9 at the event, and only cash and checks will be accepted. Get in Gear at www.facebook.com/smmagearup10milerun. For more information, visit www.ctmc.org.
