CTMC Home Care Patient Thankful For Mission-Driven Care
SAN MARCOS, TX – As many of us pause this Thursday to give thanks for the many blessings we have for one area resident, CTMC Home Health is at the top of the list of items for which he is most grateful. Life changed dramatically in 2006 for Felix Heysquirdo. He became a quadriplegic and depended on his wife, Yolanda, for his constant daily care. After one year of caring on her own for her husband of 26 years, Yolanda turned to her husband’s physician for assistance.
Dr. Gladys Weng, Internal Medicine, Central Texas Medical Associates, decided to put the mission statement of the hospital, home care agency and her own practice to the test when she reached out to CTMC Home Health to see if they could assist her patient Mr. Heysquirdo even though he no longer had insurance and was unable to afford costs of the care he needed . To Dr. Weng’s and her patient’s delight, the local non-profit agency agreed to help.
“CTMC Home Health is one of the best things that ever happened to me besides marrying my wife,” said Felix Heysquirdo, CTMC Home Health patient. “My home health nurse always knows what’s going on and I have nothing to worry about when she’s here.”
For the past three years, CTMC’s Home Health nurses have been the “eyes and ears” of his doctor: checking Felix’s vitals, changing his catheter, treating his wounds and making sure Felix received a flu shot.
“CTMC Home Health taught me how to check Felix’s blood pressure and take care of him in ways I was not prepared to do when he was injured,” said Yolanda Heysquirdo. “What we like is that they’re on call 24 hours.”
“We are pleased to be the Home Health provider of choice for families like the Heysquirdos,” said Carol Trafford, CTMC Director of Home Health. “Our goal is to enhance a patient’s recovery potential and return a patient to living their life to the fullest.”
November is “National Home Care and Hospice Month”. This year’s theme is “Home Care and Hospice: Care Stronger”. CTMC’s Home Health program is designed to care for patients with specific medical needs in the comfort of their homes providing services such as Home Health nurses, aides, therapists, social services and more. In 2011, CTMC’s Home Health program will celebrate 20 years of service in Central Texas.
