SAN MARCOS, TX – From their academic achievements to their involvement in organizations, Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) once again honored the hard work of nine outstanding regional high school students with $500 scholarships and one student with a $1,000 scholarship. The students were recognized during the Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony at CTMC on Tuesday, May 24.
The scholarships may be used for costs of attending a university, college, community college or vocational/trade school. The scholarship awards are based on community involvement, work or organization experience, financial need and academic achievement.
The 2011 CTMC Scholarship recipients who received $500 are as follows: Victoria Almanzar, San Marcos High; Wilson Anderson, Wimberley High; Cory Bergstrom, Lehman High; Brittany Howard, San Marcos High; Diana Medlock, Hays High; Travis Peyton, Wimberley High; Michael Reed, San Marcos High; Joaquin Solis, Lehman High; and William Cody Villarreal, San Marcos High. A Scholarship of Excellence for $1,000 was awarded to Sterling Gutierrez who attends San Marcos High.
“CTMC is extremely proud of these students for their academic and leadership successes,” said Clay DeStefano, CTMC Administrative Director of PR and Marketing. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to reward such deserving students with funds that will help them in their upcoming college careers.”
In 2010, CTMC awarded a total of three $1,000 scholarships and also provided two laptops to additional applicants who didn’t quite meet the criteria for the $1,000 but demonstrated a true need that the hospital wanted to meet. As evidence of its efforts to extend its mission beyond caring for patients, CTMC has been awarding scholarships to area high school seniors since 1997.
