SAN MARCOS, TEXAS
– Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States as well as Texas, according to the Center for Disease Control and the Texas Department of State Health Services. Because one out of every three deaths in the country is heart-related, Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) is again expanding its outreach efforts this year by celebrating heart health all month long in February.
“Given our expanding specialty cardiac services and the high incidence of heart disease in Central Texas, it’s time for CTMC and the residents of Hays County to focus more on heart health,” said Clay DeStefano, CTMC executive director of PR/Marketing. “We’re pleased to be able to bring these fun and effective ways to improve one’s heart health.”
CTMC’s most recent strides in cardiac care include receiving Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers from The Joint Commission and American Heart/American Stroke Association, being recognized as a San Marcos Fit-Friendly Worksite and introducing a Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit at the hospital. Later this year, CTMC will begin 24-7 operation of its interventional cardiac catheterization lab.

The hospital, which originated in 1923 as Hays County Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Memorial Hospital, was restructured in 1960. The present facility was opened at its current Wonder World Drive location in 1983. The CTMC staff of more than 700 employees works with more than 220 active and consulting physicians to provide quality services to patients and their families.
In addition, over 200 community members and interns from area educational institutions volunteer their services to the hospital. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, CTMC was named The Best Hospital in Hays County. CTMC also added a certified Chest Pain Center to its ER capabilities in 2011 and became an accredited Primary Stroke Center in 2013. In 2012, CTMC became the first operating room along the IH-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio to be equipped with a da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery suite.
