Central Texas Medical Center: News

CTMC Named First Ever Green Business of the Year
SAN MARCOS, TX – Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) has a long history of serving the needs of others. Being named the first ever “Green Business of the Year” by the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber’s annual Gala Friday, Nov. 12 was the first time the hospital was recognized for its service to the planet.

In 2009, CTMC expanded its growing green efforts with the creation of a Green Team, an initiative made up entirely of CTMC associates working to bring recycling, energy conservation and other earth-friendly practices to CTMC. The Green Team has hosted two annual Green Living Fairs with vendors providing the latest information on how to make a green impact at work and home. At the two Fairs, more than 300 associates became Green Team members by signing a 13 point pledge outlining several easy ways to lower one’s carbon footprint at work and home.

“Our goal is to make CTMC as environmentally friendly as possible," said Fred Jackson, CTMC Green Team Leader and Administrative Director of Support Services. “As CTMC expands to meet the needs of our growing community, it’s important that we remain conscious of our impact on the environment.”

In addition to the annual Green Fairs and lunch and learn sessions, the hospital’s earth-friendly efforts include all eco-friendly disposable ware in the hospital’s Café, more and more paper items replaced by online services for associates including job applications, pay checks, newsletters and other formally printed collaterals as well as the addition of special parking for bicycles and motorcycles.

An ongoing can recycling effort benefits “Can for the Cure,” a recent free shred day helped associates responsibly rid themselves of outdated, sensitive paperwork and the hospital’s recently completed $35 million dollar expansion of the Women’s Center featured green initiatives such as construction activity pollution prevention, energy efficient lighting and materials and low impact landscaping choices.

CTMC was selected from a group of other nominees with more than 20 employees. San Marcos eatery Cool Mint Café was awarded the honor for businesses with 20 or fewer employees. Earlier this year, CTMC was recognized for its growing green efforts in the Austin Business Journal’s Going Green Business Awards.
