Central Texas Medical Center’s (CTMC) critically ill patients will soon have the benefit of the most advanced telemedicine program available in hospital intensive care units (ICUs) today. The hospital has partnered with Advanced ICU Care®, the nation’s largest provider of Tele-ICU services, to deliver monitoring by highly trained intensivist physicians and critical care nurses twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week beginning later this summer.
CTMC is one of the first hospitals in the area to implement this program, which has been shown to improve patient care and to meet the best practice standard of 24/7 intensivist oversight in the ICU.
“This partnership will combine experienced intensivist-led care teams, sophisticated technology and collaborative programs with hospital staff to achieve a rigorous focus on evidence-based best practices that help improve patient care and safety,” said CTMC CEO/President Sam Huenergardt. “With the addition of around-the-clock telemonitoring by intensivist physicians to the quality care already provided by our ICU team and physicians in the hospital, our ICU patients will receive the highest level of medical care available today.”
Advanced ICU Care’s team will complement the care provided by the CTMC physicians, continuously monitoring patients’ vital signs, medications, labs and clinical status. Proactive data management tools will identify issues and prompt immediate intervention when necessary. In-room video will be utilized during periods of evaluation or when called on by the nurse. This two-way video enables face-to face consultations between the bedside staff and the Advanced ICU Care team, ensuring that help is available when needed.
“Tele-ICUs are becoming an integral part of critical care,” noted Mary Jo Gorman, MD, MBA, founder of Advanced ICU Care. “Our team is excited to collaborate with the physicians and clinicians at CTMC, supporting them in providing the best possible care and safety for their patients.”
Independent studies demonstrate that this 24/7 intensivist monitoring significantly improves patient outcomes and patient safety in the ICU. In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)
, implementation of a Tele-ICU program was associated with reduced adjusted odds of mortality and reduced hospital length of stay, as well as with improvements in best practice adherence and lower rates of preventable complications. Another study published by the New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI)
recommends that community hospitals with ten or more ICU beds adopt Tele-ICU care.
The hospital, which originated in 1923 as Hays County Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Memorial Hospital, was restructured in 1960. The present facility was opened at its current Wonder World Drive location in 1983. The CTMC staff of more than 700 employees works with more than 220 active and consulting physicians to provide quality services to patients and their families.
In addition, over 200 community members and interns from area educational institutions volunteer their services to the hospital. In 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, CTMC was named The Best Hospital in Hays County. CTMC also added a certified Chest Pain Center to its ER capabilities in 2011 and became an accredited Primary Stroke Center in 2013. In 2012, CTMC became the first operating room along the IH-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio to be equipped with a da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery suite.
