Two days per week, Dr. Darrell Piersol, a World War II veteran and retired business management professor at Texas State University, can be found in CTMC’s cardiac rehabilitation gym strengthening his heart. After Piersol was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, Austin Heart cardiologist William Abide, MD, recommended the cardiac rehabilitation program to help prevent future heart issues.
“It’s a first-class program,” Piersol said. “I enjoy the social interaction, and the staff helps me do the exercises and are always checking everything as they go along. They’re like cheerleaders in there.”
When he’s not in the gym, Piersol works on his strength training regimen at home. Since Piersol was first introduced to CTMC’s cardiac rehabilitation program, his wife, Barbara Piersol, has noticed a big difference.
“I don’t have to worry about him being short of breath when we go out for a walk,” she said.
Darrell and Barbara both receive their routine screenings at CTMC and value their community hospital. CTMC’s cardiac rehab program goes beyond physical activity. They also provide education about diet, medication and CTMC’s CREATION Health philosophy.
