Central Texas Medical Center: News

Minimally invasive anterior hip surgery now available at CTMC
SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) recently added another emerging procedure to its specialty surgery offerings. The Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery (AMIS) total hip replacement is being performed by Live Oak Health Partners (LOHP) Orthopedic Surgeon Stuart Shapiro, DO.

“Hip pain limits your daily activities and affects your mood, health and general wellbeing,” Shapiro said.

With a history that spans nearly 70 years, total hip replacement surgeries are common and safe for the treatment of severe hip pain and impairment. The main benefits of a successful total hip replacement are the reduction of hip pain, recovered mobility and improvement in quality of life.

“What sets the AMIS Total Hip Replacement method apart is that it was designed to minimize harm to muscles, blood vessels and nerves surrounding the joint,” Shapiro said. “After surgery, most of my patients ask themselves why they didn’t have it done sooner.”

AMIS hip replacement surgery is unique and provides patients with the following benefits:

• No muscles cut
• Decreased post-operative pain
• Shorter rehabilitation
• Shorter hospital Stay
• Small skin scar
• Faster return to daily activities
• Less blood loss
• Reduced risk of dislocation
• Prevention of limping

After experiencing worsening pain to his hip joint, Buddy Martin, a San Marcos resident, opted for hip replacement surgery using the AMIS method. Martin was surprised when he was walking up and down stairs just 48 hours after his surgery, and he said he has not experienced pain in his hip joint since the May 7 operation.

“I was elated. The time table was exactly what Dr. Shapiro said, and I was pleased with that,” Martin said.

Martin completed three weeks of physical therapy and was back to work in 3-and-a-half weeks.

“I one-hundred percent recommend AMIS hip replacement surgery. I’ll tell anybody that will listen. I don’t see any sense in waiting.”

Dr. Shapiro is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with LOHP Specialty Care in San Marcos and treats patients of all ages. For more information about LOHP and the services they offer, visit liveoakhealthpartners.com.
