SAN MARCOS, TX – Milk from a mother fights infection while providing ideal nutrition, research shows. But not all mothers are able to provide breast milk to their babies. It is because of the life-saving benefits from breast milk that Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) has partnered with Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin to provide and accept breast milk to help newborn babies grow and thrive. As a result, CTMC is the only Certified Milk Depot in Hays County, providing a local drop-off location for milk donations.
Since the partnership began in April, CTMC has sent more than 1,000 ounces of breast milk in just a few short months to Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin. CTMC’s first breast milk donor, Adelina Gonzales, gave birth to twin daughters, Emily and Julieta, in March at the CTMC Women’s Center. Along with providing milk for her newborn girls, remarkably, Avelina has also been able to generously donated several hundred ounces of breast milk a week to the milk bank.
”We are thankful to mother’s like Adelina who make it possible for more babies to receive the nutrients they need from breast milk,” said Margie Lieck, CTMC Director of Women’s Services. “This is a wonderful partnership of mothers helping mothers.”
As a token of gratitude for her dedication as a breast milk donor, Adelina was presented with a special twin stroller, to make going out with her newborn twins and her son an easier task.
